It is a specific `F33f`_`[Goal modeling`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Goal_modeling]`_`f method; another is `F33f`_`[i*`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=I*]`_`f. It allows for requirements to be calculated from goal diagrams.`:cite-ref-1[`F5bf`_`[1`#cite-note-1]`_`f] KAOS stands for `*Knowledge Acquisition in automated specification`*`:cite-ref-2[`F5bf`_`[2`#cite-note-2]`_`f] or `*Keep All Objectives Satisfied`*.`:cite-ref-3[`F5bf`_`[3`#cite-note-3]`_`f]

The University of Oregon and the University of Louvain (Belgium) designed the KAOS methodology in 1990 by `F33f`_`[Axel van Lamsweerde`:/page/wikibook/entry.mu`zim=wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2025-08.zim|entry_path=Axel_van_Lamsweerde]`_`f and others.`:cite-ref-objectiver-com-4-0[`F5bf`_`[4`#cite-note-objectiver-com-4]`_`f] It is taught worldwide at the university level`:cite-ref-5[`F5bf`_`[5`#cite-note-5]`_`f] for capturing software requirements.

There is lack of evidence that KAOS is used in the industry`:cite-ref-6[`F5bf`_`[6`#cite-note-6]`_`f] and as of February 2023, the only tool supporting it is Objectiver, written by the same group`:cite-ref-7[`F5bf`_`[7`#cite-note-7]`_`f] behind the KAOS methodology, with the latest release 3.0c47 dated at March 9th, 2012.`:cite-ref-8[`F5bf`_`[8`#cite-note-8]`_`f]
